Impact on Student Learning:

All 23 of my third graders showed growth within the duration of my study. Not only this, the students' gained confidence and started to become excited to text tag to deepen their understanding of the texts they read.

Impact

Our math curriculum is very heavy in the reading area. Students often do more reading than math within each problem. By the end of this action research, my students were able text code and tag within their math word problems and be able to comprehend each story problem with more ease.

Text Tagging

Excitement

During guided reading rotations, students started to take initiative and wanted to text tag without being prompted. The students eventually wanted to see how many sticky notes they could use in one sitting. They loved being able to tag up their books with the different color sticky notes, little did they know, they were really deepening their understanding.

Confidence

Growth

Students confidence started to boost towards the end of the action research. When my students were taking AR tests and comprehension tests, they would be so excited to show me how they were text tagging to complete the assigned task. Overall, the strategy of text tagging was motivating them to complete quizzes and tests by using the taught strategies.

Impact on Future Teaching

Not only did this action research impact my students progress and growth, it also impacted the way I will teach guided reading in the future. The research I did to implement these strategies showed me how important it is to use research based instruction. Not only did I help my students, but they also helped me by pinpointing what helps them learn best. I will continue to use these strategies in the future because they demonstrated a strong impact on student learning and reading comprehension.

Professional Growth

During this action research process, I was able to collaborate with several stakeholders. This helped me become a better educator and lead the students to success, daily. Since this was my first year teaching, I knew I had a lot to learn but I now understand that learning won't stop just because my action research is over. Seeking out new strategies each and every year to meet the needs of my students is a personal goal for myself; this ensures that I am not settling as an educator, and I am always striving to give my best. It is my hope that throughout my career path, I continue to provide engaging, research based activities for my students

Remaining Questions

With the current pandemic, I wasn't able to complete my final post test. My overall thought and hope is that the students would have shown growth in that final week and my data would have been able to prove that text tagging and guided questioning increased their comprehension, but I am not certain that it did. I also wonder if this skill is something that will follow them in the future. Ideally, it will stick with them and will continue to help them comprehend while reading.
